About Us
Wilderness Medical Associates was founded in 1981 by Peter Goth, M.D. to provide medical training and risk management for Outward Bound Schools in the United States. The conventional medical training at the time was designed for urban areas and did not address the wilderness context.
Our current President and Medical Director is Dr. David Johnson, an emergency room physician with significant backcountry experience.
WMA annually trains over 7,000 students of varying skill levels in the US and abroad. Our clients include colleges and universities, camps, outdoor adventure companies, rural ambulance services, private businesses, and government entities.
According to our President Dr. Johnson, “WMA is unique because we’ve built it from the ground up by ourselves. We create our own books and teaching materials and rely on our own effort and resources.”
Our exceptional instructors and our office support staff care deeply about providing the highest quality training. Our depth of medical knowledge and experience in outdoor education, rescue work and expedition travel is hard to find elsewhere.
