Summary:
Wilderness First Responder (WFR) is the definitive course in medical training for outdoor educators, guides, SAR team members, and others who work or play in remote areas. The curriculum is comprehensive and practical, including all of the essential principles and skills required to assess and manage medical problems in isolated and extreme environments. This 5-day format is for individuals and sponsors with less time available for on-site training and requires 25 hours of pre-course preparation.

Registration, payment of fees, cancellation and refund policy: Your deposit secures a space in the selected course. The remainder of payment must be completed on the first day of class. Deposits are fully refundable if you cancel up to six weeks before the course start date or if Camp Manito-wish YMCA cancels the course. If you cancel less than six weeks before the course start date your entire deposit will be forfeited.
Prerequisites: Students must be at least sixteen years old to participate. Those under 18 years of age will require the written consent of a parent or guardian. Certain course sponsors, including those offering the five-day format, may set a higher minimum age or establish other requirements consistent with their program. No previous medical training is required.
Accommodations: Included in full fee.
Course housing is provided for all participants in year round, winterized housing. The housing assignments will be posted at the Leadership Center. There will not be a formal check-in until the start of the class.
The heated buildings contain bunks, full bathrooms, a well-equipped kitchen, and a large common room with a wood stove. You will need to bring BEDDING, PILLOWS, and TOWELS.
No camping is allowed on Camp Manito-wish YMCA property.
Food: Breakfast, lunch and dinner are provided in the Leadership Center dining room (January/March) or Nash Lodge (May/June) on class days. Meal times are at 8:00 a.m., 12:30 p.m., and 6:00 p.m. There will be a vegetarian option. Please note on the registration form if you prefer this option. There is no meal service on off days if applicable.
Course Format and Arrival Time: You are welcome to stay at Camp Manito-wish YMCA the evening before the course. Please arrive after 4:00 p.m. Meal service does not begin until the first day of class, but you can find a good meal in Boulder Jct. that evening. The course begins with breakfast at 8:00 a.m. the following day.
What to bring: March course participants should expect snow, bitter cold, and short winter days. A large portion of the class takes place outside in the snow and cold. Come prepared to be outside for hours at a time. May participants will experience the Spring to Summer transition. Warm days are followed by cool nights. It could rain for days at a time. Bring good rain gear (tops and bottoms) and plenty of warm clothes. Layering is the key to staying warm in the changing temperatures of the Northwoods.

Travel Directions: Directions to Camp Manito-wish YMCA
From Milwaukee: I-94 west to Hwy 51 north, 51 north to Vilas County Rd M (about 7 miles north of Minocqua), turn east (right on M) and continue to Boulder Junction. Turn left on Vilas County Road K west out of town. Travel approximately 1/2 to Camp Manito-wish east to entrance, turn right. Please check in at the Manito-wish Leadership Center for housing assignment.
From Twin Cities: Take I-94 east to Hwy 29 (near Chippewa Falls, WI), travel east on Highway 29 to Highway 51 (at Wausau). Turn north onto 51 and refer to instructions above.
Air Travel: Northwest Airlines and Midwest Airlines fly into Rhinelander, WI airport. Contact us for pick-up arrangements.
Sponsor Policies: Camp Manito-wish YMCA is a drug and tobacco free environment. Alcohol is not allowed on site during the course. We are unable to accommodate participant pets.
