2003 Goth Scholarship Winner: Wilderness Inquiry - Wilderness First Responder Training
2003 Goth Scholarship Winner:
Wilderness Inquiry
Wilderness Inquiry, a wilderness adventure organization focusing on accessibility for all, is the first recipient of the Peter Goth Wilderness Medicine Scholarship awarded by Wilderness Medical Associates. Wilderness Medical Associates contributed tuition and materials and YMCA Camp Menogyn contributed room and board.
Founded in 1978, the Minneapolis, MN, non-profit organization provides outdoor adventure for people of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds including people with disabilities. WI travels to over 35 destinations by canoe, sea kayak, dog sled, horse pack, and backpack served over 150,000 people, including many who have disabilities or otherwise do not fit the "wilderness traveler" stereotype. Their trips are usually integrated to include older people, younger people, people with disabilities, veterans, accountants, physicians, people who live in the city and people who live in rural areas. Both novices and experienced backcountry travelers participate. It's the unique mix of people and places that makes each WI trip a special experience.
One element that brings it all together is WI staff. The staff are not only skilled wilderness guides, they are also teachers, poets, business people, and health care professionals, all sharing a common goal - to make a participant’s experience the best it can be. In addition to the outdoor adventures, WI conducts a variety of activities including community events, research, training, equipment design, trail and facility assessments and policy development.
This scholarship is awarded annually by Wilderness Medical Associates. Criteria are available HERE or by calling 1-888-WILDMED.
