2005 Goth Scholarship Winner: Camp Susan Curtis - Wilderness First Responder Training
2005 Goth Scholarship Winner:
Camp Susan Curtis
Since 1974, Camp Susan Curtis (CSC) has provided a high quality, tuition-free summer camp for over 12,000 Maine children living in poverty. Woven into experiential programming is the purpose of enhancing each child’s self-concept, social skills and emotional intelligence.
Children are referred at age eight from a network of school professionals and participate in over 30 activities. As teens, a six-week leadership curriculum that balances adventure expeditions, life skills workshops, and leadership development is offered. At 16 and beyond, CSC offers employment, career training and a scholarship program. Camp Susan Curtis is funded through caring Maine businesses, individuals, and community groups.
Susan Curtis was the daughter of former Maine Governor Ken Curtis and his wife Polly. Susan died at 11 years of age of cystic fibrosis during his first term of governor. Maine citizens wanted to do something in her memory, and the Curtises wanted it to be something that would benefit the other children of Maine. The Susan Curtis Foundation was started and they purchased, with little more than a handshake, an old hunting lodge in Stoneham, ME on Trout Pond. This became Camp Susan Curtis and serves only children living in poverty. Maine has over 35,000 children living in poverty.
