Project C.A.N.O.E. Celebrates 30 Years of Guiding Youth at Risk
Project C.A.N.O.E. helps youth at risk build positive futures for themselves. Youth gain self esteem, life skills and experience healthy interpersonal relationships through wilderness canoe trips and other challenging outdoor activities.
Edwin Ortiz who participated in one of Project C.A.N.O.E.’s early canoe trips sent us a letter noting:
Established in 1976, Project C.A.N.O.E. (Creative and Natural Outdoor Experience Inc.) provides a variety of wilderness canoe trips for youth at risk. These are youth who would not ordinarily have the opportunity to participate in outdoor activities with their peers due to learning, social, behavioural and/or economic difficulties. Many of these youth are living in very troubled and sometimes violent home environments. Others are wards of Children’s Aid or residents of group homes.
Project C.A.N.O.E. has had a profound and positive impact on the lives of the more than 2,500 youth who have participated in the program during the past 30 years. The underlying characteristics of Project C.A.N.O.E.’s operation are:
- Small tripping groups with a staff:camper ratio of 1:2
- Provision of a positive individual experience in a safe group setting
- Provision of healthy adult role models for youth
- Focus on youth aged 12 - 19 (the majority of youth are aged 13-17)
- Focus on campers who have known behavioral problems
- Recognition of the individual strengths of youth and a challenge to build on them
Project C.A.N.O.E. is honored and grateful to be the recipient of the Peter Goth Wilderness Medicine Scholarship. Over the years, our staff has benefited greatly from the courses offered by Wilderness Medical Associates Canada and we have great respect for the organization and its staff. In an effort to help our older youth gain skills necessary for employment in a camp environment, we plan to use the Scholarship for a course for one of the graduates of our Leaders in Training program.
