The Wilderness First Responder program is the ideal medical training for leaders in remote areas including outdoor educators, guides, military, professional search and rescue teams, researchers, and those involved in disaster relief. The curriculum is comprehensive and practical. It includes the essential principles and skills required to assess and manage medical problems in isolated and extreme environments for days and weeks if necessary.
Directions from Twin Cities to Ely:
Take I-35 north to the Cloquet exit. Take Highway 33 north through Cloquet to Highway 53. Take Highway 53 north past Virginia to Highway 169. Go east on Highway 169 to Ely.
Directions from Ely to Camp Widjiwagan:
After taking 169 through the town of Ely, continue on 169 approximately 1.5 miles East out of town. Just East of the entrance to the International Wolf Center, turn left onto County Road 88. Follow County Road 88 for 2.3 miles, to 116 which is the Echo Trail. Turn right onto the Echo Trail and go 9.1 miles to the North Arm Road (less than 1 mile past Fenske Lake Campground). Turn left onto the North Arm Road (644) for approximately 1.5 miles to the camp entrance which will be on your left. Turn left into camp and proceed to the office in the Sigurd Olson Center.

Room and Board:
- Lodging is available for students who register for the room and board. Facilities are rustic. Students will be housed in dormitory-style cabins. There is no plumbing in the cabins but each is close to a wash house. Students are required to provide their own linens or sleeping bag.
- All meals are provided for students who register for room and board. Only lunch is provided for students who do not register for room and board. No dinner is served the day before the course starts or on the last day of the course.
