Julia Charpek
Julia Charpek, an EMT at Big Bear Mountain Resort, found her love for the outdoors in a
South Appalachian backpacking club in 2013. A dedicated backcountry rescuer since
then, Julia holds Wilderness First Responder, EMT and AIRIE avalanche rescue
certifications. She’s also a Registered Yoga Instructor and a Red Cross Lifeguard.
With a Marine Science degree from the University of South Carolina, Julia has thrived in
outdoor education for over a decade. Specializing in marine science courses, she has
instructed in snorkeling, sea kayaking, backpacking, rock climbing and rope access
across the country. Julia’s commitment to inclusivity shines through her teaching
experience with English as a Second Language (ESL) students; she strives to create an
environment that celebrates diversity in every classroom she enters.
As a member of the San Bernardino County Search and Rescue team, Julia thrives in
diverse terrains. From guiding on Catalina Island to patrolling the San Bernardino
Mountains, she embraces the thrill of sea and snow. When she’s off duty, she enjoys
long hikes with her dog, explores the sea through SCUBA diving and sailing and indulges
in the meditative art of embroidery
