We offer a Wilderness First Responder certification course for outdoor professionals and enthusiasts. This course is taught in conjunction with Wilderness Medical Associates of Maine.

As an outdoor person, you may find yourself in a situation where help is more than a phone call away. Typical first aid courses train students to provide care before an ambulance arrives. This course is designed for people who often travel where dialing 911 is not an option. It is experiential and tough, with emphasis on practical sessions and videotaped simulations using mock victims. This course runs for seven days.

A Typical Day

Full course: Wilderness First Responder is a 70-hour Wilderness Medical Associates course running over seven days. The course begins on the first day at 8:00 and runs until about 6 p.m. each day. The other days of the course may have different start or end times. Your instructor will let you know what the schedule will be on the first day of the course. Sometimes the day will include evening video critiques or simulations. You should plan on spending time in the evenings, after the course is done, working on homework.

The Middle Fork of the Salmon is one of THE premier river trips in the world of whitewater! This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to explore the crown jewel of American Rivers while also developing and honing lifesaving skills in a real-world
environment. The course begins at our property in Salmon, ID, where we will spend day-1 in the classroom and preparing for the river trip. The next day we will travel to the river and will encounter up to Class IV whitewater over the next 5 days, with
classroom and practical skills sessions each day. Outings for hikes, historic sites, and hot springs may be possible, depending on timing with instruction. This WFR course includes 1 day of Classroom and 5 days of Field Instruction on the river; All food and required equipment included; Guided whitewater river trip; Transportation to and from the river, once you reach Salmon, ID. This trip is operated by Middle Fork
Adventures under a special use permit with the Salmon-Challis National Forest.

The Wilderness Advanced First Aid is the perfect entry-level course for outdoor adventurers and outdoor professionals who may need to provide patient care when help is delayed for hours to days. The course focuses on basic lifesaving skills, patient assessment, field care for common injuries and illnesses, environmental illnesses, and proper reporting for rescue assistance.

Please indicate on your registration form if you would like to be included on the meal plan and to what extent. We ask that you choose the option that best suits you for all days of the course, as MKC cannot accommodate variations in meals on different days, e.g. you choose lunch-only one day and dinner-only another.

Course taught at our beautiful private facility bordering National Forest

This course will run as a 4-day WAFA, then a 4-day bridge with a day off in between.

The Wilderness First Responder is a comprehensive medical training for outdoor educators, guides, professional search and rescue teams, and others who work and adventure in remote settings. Learn the essential skills, knowledge, and critical thinking required to assess and manage medical problems in low-resource environments for days and weeks if necessary.
